Jan Brandes (1743 Bodegraven - 1808 Sweden) was a Dutch preacher for the Dutch VOC in Batavia. Since the loss of his wife he made every day drawings of everything he saw in his diary. These diaries are of great historical value because there is no other such detailed visual record of 18th century colonial life and the biodiversity of Indonesia. For this set we have selected his best botanicals.
