Merian wrote (translated from old Dutch): "The pineapple, is the most important of all edible fruits….the small colored leaves just below the fruit resemble red satin decorated with yellow accents. The long leaves are light sea green on the outside, grass green on the inside and have a reddish tint on the edges with sharp thorns"
