Product Details

Merian write about plate 28: "These beautiful and very large lemons grow wild in Suriname. They are candied and called sukade in the Netherlands . On this tree, I found a strange and uncommon type of insect..….On June 11, 1701, they shed their skin and created cocoons, as shown on the leaf. From one of them, on June 27, 1701 (when I was already aboard the ship returning to the Netherlands), a remarkable little moth emerged, which is depicted on the same leaf. The beautiful beetle, black with red and yellow spots, sitting on the fruit, was included in this illustration because of its rarity"
