Maria Sibylla Merian - Plate 40 - Papaya

Merian wrote about plate 40: " At the tops of these tall papaya trees, I found many white caterpillars. Since the trunk is tall and hollow, the tree was not climbable. I had it cut down to collect the caterpillars. I fed them the leaves of this tree until June 10, 1700, when they spun cocoons and turned into liver-colored pupae, as shown on the stem of the fruit. On July 3, small moths emerged, like the one depicted sitting on the fruit"
