Maria Sibylla Merian grew up in a publishing household and learned the art of drawing and painting from her stepfather, the renowned still-life painter Jacob Marrel. Determined to establish her own career, she published her first book, Blumenbuch ( Book of Flowers ), in 1675. The book, featuring her exquisite botanical illustrations, was well received and sold successfully, marking the beginning of her journey as an artist, naturalist, and entrepreneur.
