Planthunters

For the past two decades, I have been captivated by the endeavors of plant hunters and the artistic expressions of those who, from ancient times to our contemporary era, have unveiled the rich biodiversity of botanics, bringing forth the visibility of countless plant varieties.

Through the ages, the depiction of plants has orchestrated a transformative shift in humanity's relationship with nature. Herbaria and botanical drawings have served as windows, introducing the public to an array of plants from distant lands, fostering a deeper respect for the natural world.

In our present age, influenced in part by the VOC, the prevailing attitude has become predominantly economic, yielding adverse effects on the environment. However, contemporary awareness of our anthropogenic impact on the world has grown.

Embarking on a journey through botanical heritage, I aspire to contribute to the evolution from an economically centered mindset to one where humanity operates in synergy with nature.

Estate Echten

Het Huis te Echten is a beautifully situated havezate near the town of Echten.

A havezate is a fortified house, homestead or farm. In the 17th century, the manor was a knightly estate. Havezates occurred in the county of Zutphen (approx 40), in Overijssel (approx 122) and Drenthe (approx 18). Of those 18, 9 have been preserved, of which Huis te Echten is, in my opinion, the most beautiful.

Huis te Echten has known the Echten family as its owner for a long time. In 1351 Volker van Echten (1300-1363) buys a house in Echten. After more than six centuries of inheritance within the family, the house was sold in 1967 to Mr. H.P. van Heukelom Foundation, which is committed to visually and mentally impaired children.

The canal around the building dates from before 1700. The house was then accessible to barges that could supply the house. Later, the two buildings on the north and south sides were added to the building. Although there is a tower on one of these buildings, the church services were probably held in a hall of the house itself.

During the restoration in 1979-1980 by the Bureau Monumentenzorg, the gardens were significantly expanded and radically changed.

"Plant yourself in the soil of Drenthe, you will germinate there."

Vincent van Gogh in a letter to his brother Theo

In 1883, van Gogh left the Hofstad for Drenthe, stayed there for three months and was deeply impressed.

"Drenthe is so beautiful, it really captivates me so much," he writes to his brother. It is during this period that he develops his passion for painting and shows which path he will take with his art.

Five paintings, several drawings and a series of beautiful letters to his brother Theo have been preserved from his Drenthe period.

Drenthe is still beautifully unspoilt. The small scale in the landscape predominates and that gives it an unspoiled and intimate character.
